Problem:
Bringing art to light after dark

Tweed Valley Hospital’s entrance features outdoor Aboriginal artwork by Frances Belle Parker called “The Path We Take”. It welcomes patients and families with cultural meaning and natural beauty. But this meaningful installation had a big problem. It disappeared into darkness after sunset. It lost its impact when many patients and families needed that welcome most. The hospital needed a lighting solution that would showcase the artwork day and night. It also had to meet the tough conditions of the outdoor environment.

The vision needed luminaires that could highlight the natural textures. This project needed our attention to detail and commitment to excellence. The lighting design would honour both the artistic vision and the practical needs of a 24-hour healthcare environment.

Lighting artworks transforms healthcare environments

Healthcare settings need proper lighting for artworks to deliver healing benefits. Well-lit artworks serve both clinical and therapeutic purposes. Properly illuminated installations in hospitals create healing environments. They support patient recovery and staff wellbeing. But outdoor artworks face unique lighting challenges.

Solution:
Custom luminaires meet cultural meaning

Our approach to lighting Frances Belle Parker’s artwork needed innovative thinking. It needed precision engineering. We collaborated with the contractor to go over the light requirements, positioning and materials. We needed to understand the practical requirements, deciding on backlighting rather than front. The strategy, while unusual to light up art from behind, ended up being the ideal situation in the outdoor environment.

Precision analysis for perfect lighting

The first step was to determine the exact lighting angles needed. This would showcase each element of Parker’s installation. Our engineers conducted an analysis and established the optimal positioning for the luminaires.

To support the artwork’s varied textures and flowing forms needed different lighting approaches. Our team had to calculate mounting locations and tilt angles. These would eliminate harsh shadows and reduce glare. They would emphasise each panel and not block the front of the work.

This careful process showed our attention to detail and technical expertise. We used modern technology and proven methods. This led to the solution of custom uplight luminaires with and adjustable tilt-gimbal. These could be fine-tuned during installation.

Daylight harvesting for seamless operation

Healthcare facilities operate around the clock. We integrated advanced daylight harvesting technology into the lighting system. This innovative approach automatically adjusts the luminaire output based on ambient light conditions.

The system gradually increases lighting as natural light fades. This creates a seamless transition without sudden changes that could be jarring for patients and families.

Our daylight harvesting solution represents our commitment to energy efficiency. The intelligent sensors monitor ambient light levels and adjust the LED output accordingly. This significantly reduces energy consumption and extends the life of the lighting system.

The coastal location of Tweed Valley Hospital presented significant environmental challenges. These demanded robust materials and engineering solutions. Our luminaires feature Anthracite outdoor corrosive resistance technology. This provides exceptional protection against salt air, moisture and temperature variations. All of which are common in the Tweed-Byron region.

This advanced coating system ensures long-term performance. It maintains the luminaires’ appearance despite exposure to harsh outdoor conditions. These perform reliably over extended periods and are perfect for external environments. Our rigorous specifications process ensured every component met the demanding requirements.

The completed lighting installation has transformed Tweed Valley Hospital’s entrance into a welcoming beacon. It honours Frances Belle Parker’s cultural artwork all day and night. Our luminaires highlight every detail of “The Path We Take”. This ensures the piece has powerful impact for patients, families and staff arriving during evening and night hours. The lighting creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that supports the hospital’s healing goals.

This project shows our ability to deliver solutions that go beyond simple lighting. The lighting design addresses the client’s vision for a culturally sensitive entrance. It serves as both wayfinding aid and source of inspiration. Our approach with contractors resulted in a lighting solution that enhances the art and healthcare experience.
