Bespoke fibre optic star ceiling illuminates Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum

Superlight New Zealand fibre-optic and strip lighting in the Waikato Museum exhibition

Problem:
Creating stars for child-friendly museum learning

The team at the museum wanted to create a star ceiling with printed vinyl graphics. And they wanted to integrate lighting for a starry night atmosphere. It would engage visitors while they explored the exhibition. The effect would also be encircled by a colour-changing halo of light around the edge. This project needed both technical and creative thinking to achieve the right effect.

The benefits of fibre-optic lighting:

  • They transmit light without transferring heat, ideal for museum or temperature sensitive environments
  • In a similar vein, fibre-optic does not emit UV, protecting people and objects from damage

Solution:
Creating a stellar lighting system from scratch

Our team at Superlight developed a complete lighting solution using two popular products. We supplied a fibre-optic loom harness and engine to create the starry ceiling. This effect is often used for automotive, theatre and event ceilings for ambient lighting. These were recommended as it creates thousands of precise light points without heat. It is important in museums to protect sensitive exhibits and create the scene. And it also keeps the temperature in the space stable.

The halo lighting along the edge of the ceiling is our Flexlite RGBW strip lighting. It has colour-changing abilities using a controller. Recessed into the wedge, it fits seamlessly into the ceiling edging. We have a proven track record in our approach to creative and technical lighting projects. It makes us the ideal New Zealand lighting supplier of choice for this specialist work.

Results:
A stellar result that transforms visitor experiences

The finished installation transformed the exhibition space into an atmospheric event. The fibre-optic star ceiling created thousands of twinkling light points. And the colour-changing edge strip lighting can be adapted for different exhibits.

This lighting solution successfully met both practical and visual needs. The fibre-optic removed heat concerns while creating a visual impact. And the strip lighting provides flexible colour options. Visitors now experience an engaging exhibit where lighting actively helps tell stories. This shows Superlight’s expertise in delivering bespoke luminaire solutions for complex museum projects. Our attention to detail is evident from initial concept through to final installation. We pride ourselves on manufacturing and delivering cutting-edge technology that meets creative visions.
