This historical fountain needed a modern and colourful lighting upgrade

The Craig Memorial Fountain has been part of Oamaru since 1920. Built to honour Thomas Craig, it’s the kind of heritage feature that makes a town special. The restoration crew needed waterproof lighting that could cop a beating. It needed to be under full submersion and manage the ambient temperature of New Zealand. Your average luminaire malfunctions within months in these harsh conditions. The contractors knew they couldn’t mess around with fixtures that were not up to scratch. They needed lighting that was robust, reliable and would actually last, long after installation.

THE SOLUTION

Stainless steel lighting engineered for permanent underwater use

We supplied eight recessed pool lights machined from 316 stainless steel. This steel handles corrosion better than anything else on the market. The colour-changing LED system gives the fountain different lighting effects without complicated controls. And we instructed contractors to get proper water-resistant seals rated for continuous submersion.

Downlights that adapt to every occasion

Golden Sands Baptist Church, Auckland, wanted a space for their congregation and community. The new building would have a dual purpose. It would need to suit weekly church services. And also transform into a hireable space for events for the local community.

Both uses required a space that would adjust to each mood. For instance, regular Sunday services would most likely need bright, natural lighting. Events and gatherings in the room could use more elaborate lighting. This would help to change the mood and atmosphere of the space for celebrations. Holiday or birthday celebrations, lit with different coloured lighting, would engage an audience. Service performances on the stage could bring focus to speakers or musicians. Here, standard white downlights wouldn’t suit. The goal ended up being to find lighting that could span the space and change colour for each use. And in either case, the fittings would need to adhere to the sloped ceiling and cover the large space.

Building adaptable event space lighting

We worked with the electrical contractors to understand what the church needed. After getting the plans, our engineers built 3D models of the space. Then they created lighting simulations. This showed how the downlights would work across the sloping ceiling.
