Problem:
Aesthetic Vision, Functional Needs

The design team for the Riversdale project had a clear vision. They needed custom-made outdoor bollards to fit the clean, minimalist look of the outdoor space. The luminaires had to provide safe lighting along paths and landscaped walkways. And it had to look contemporary, modern and low glare.

The real challenge was manufacturing good design with strict functional requirements. The bollards had to be durable and meet access lighting standards for public and disabled pedestrian use. Off-the-shelf solutions didn’t fit the style envisioned by the client.

This meant the entire luminaire, from housing to optics, had to be developed from scratch. The solution had to be efficient, elegant, and ready to install with minimal disruption to the project timeline.

  • Outdoor bollard use: bollards are used for wayfinding, safety and to reduce trip hazards in low-light areas.
  • Public lighting and safety: outdoor lighting reduces night-time trip and fall risks by over 50% in pedestrian zones.

Lighting for access and safety

Lighting in public areas must meet multiple standards for visibility, safety, and accessibility. It’s not just about looks – it’s about creating a safe environment for everyone.

  • Visibility for Pedestrians
Access lighting must offer consistent visibility without glare or shadow pockets.
  • Lighting for Wheelchair Access
AS1428 requires lighting along access paths to be continuous and even.
  • Bollards for Trip Safety
Correct bollard height and light output reduce visual clutter and trip risks.

Solution:
Custom-made elegance, engineered to last

We took on the full process, from early briefing through to post-installation checks. Every step focused on quality, durability, and a clean look that suited the space. Our skilled team managed prototyping, testing, and full fabrication. They worked to specification and developed the bollard to the designer’s vision. We used cutting-edge technology, quality materials and precision techniques to create the luminaire. The result was a was functional, long-lasting and beautiful bollard.

1. Understanding the brief and designing with precision

Each bollard had to match the surrounding architecture. We worked to strict technical drawings, ensuring every profile was clean and elegant. Our design team completed LUX calculations and simulations of the projected lighting effect. It wasn’t just about making something that looked good. It had to perform to spec, meet standards, and withstand the elements.

2. Planning it right with lighting simulations

We created lighting simulations to test how the bollards would work once installed. This let us see how the light would spread across paths and open areas. It helped us check that there were no dark spots, glare, or uneven patches. By planning it out this way, we made sure the bollards followed best practice and met Australian safety standards.

3. Manufacturing excellence, built by skilled hands

As the design was locked in, we moved fast to produce the final luminaires. Our local manufacturing team worked with precision, using high-grade aluminium and LED components. Each unit was tested before dispatch. We made sure every luminaire had consistent output, no sharp edges, and a smooth finish. Our process is what sets us apart with no shortcuts or cheap materials, just quality lighting made properly.

We take pride in delivering luminaires that are not only reliable but look great and perform exactly how they should. The LEDs we implemented were energy-efficient, long-lasting and offered high colour accuracy to suit the look and feel of the space. It’s this level of care that ensures each fitting works perfectly and stands the test of time.

Designing outdoor lighting for safety, comfort and long-term performance

  • Even light distribution: outdoor pedestrian lighting should be even and glare-free to improve visibility and comfort.
  • Durability in all conditions: luminaires in outdoor areas must withstand UV, rain, and impact without degrading.
  • Design matters: Well-designed bollards improve wayfinding, reduce maintenance, and enhance architectural appeal.

Results:

Seamless lighting that blends with its surroundings

The final result was a custom luminaire that ticked every box and brought the design vision to life. We matched the requested materials and delivered safe, even light across the walkways. The bollards are strong, stylish, and built to last. And using our latest LED technology it provided long-lasting performance with no maintenance to date.

By working closely with the client and staying involved through every stage, we made sure the solution was delivered on time and exactly to spec. The finished result is a well-lit, durable, and visually seamless space that blends function with design. View the museum here and the case study from the architects and designers here.
